History of Great Wall-Han Wall, Northern and Southern Dynasties The Han Wall After Qin Dynasty, the Great Wall was renovated by the successive feudal governments from time to time. The Han Dynasty ( 206B.C.-220A.D ) also attrached great importance to the functions of the Great Wall. During Western Han Period, the nomadic Xiongnu tribes rose to be even stronger, and frequently marauded southward. to resist Xiongnu's attacks, Han Government continued to restore and extend the Great Wall. During the period of the ruling from Emperor Wen to Emperor Xuan, a 10,000-kilometer-long Great Wall was set up from Ershi City in Da Wan to the north bank of the Heilongjiang River, which marked as the longest wall ever built in Chinese history. Half of the legendary Silk Road ran along the Han Wall. The continuous renovations on the Great Wall during Northern and Southern Dynasties Period During Northern and Southern Dynasties Period, China was once again a chaotic land without central governing. Nomadic tribes from the north gradually began to inhabit and establish their own states in north China, inner Hanguguan land, and even central plains. Their states were summed to be the Northern Dynasties, which confronting with the Southern Dynasties. Some northern states, such as Northern Wei, Eastern Wei, Northern Qi, and Northern Zhou, respectively built their walls north to the Hetao (River Bend ) of the Yellow River, and east to Liaoxi area. Those walls crisscrossed and could add up to over 10,000 li as well. After its reunification of China, Shui Dynasty constructed a wall about 4 or 5 thousand li long, running from the upper and middle reaches of the Yellow River to Longxi via Wuyuan, Yulin and Ningxia. The Shui Wall connected the remaining walls of the Northern Dynasties and thus formed another defensive work.
