Overview of Nowaday Nyingchi
Nyingchi boasts rich resources, beautiful landscape and talent. The years after 1978, when the policy of reform and opening up was introduced, witnessed a rapid rise of the formerly secluded Nyingchi in southeast Tibet, a new "economic corridor" of Tibet Autonomous Region. In as few as 12 years, Nyingchi changed its economic outlook and leaped to the forefront in the region in terms of economic construction, reform and opening up. The GNP of Nyingchi was only 66.1 million yuan RMB and the per capita net income of the farmers and herdsman was 425.4 yuan RMB in 1986 when the regional administration was rehabilitated. The figures increased to 75.1 million yuan and 540.7 yuan, respectively, in 1988. The GNP surpassed 200 million yuan in 1991 and reached 335.12 million yuan in 1996. The per capita net income of the farmers and herdsman reached 1447.92 yuan in 1996. With these remarkable "pole jumps" in as few as ten years, Nyingchi ranked first in Tibet in terms of economic indexes such as financial self-sufficiency, per capita net income of farmers and herdsman and per capita food occupancy. The agriculture and animal husbandry are developing with great vitality and are making a transition toward modernization in Nyingchi. Hybridized rice and corn are planted in Zaya and Medog. The successful introduction and cultivation of tangerine and tung trees provides beneficial experience in determining the layout, cultivation and commercialized production of the farm industry. The newly developed farmland of 730 hectares in Bome with a total investment of 3.71 million yuan has increased the annual output of grain by 2.3 million kilograms, canola by 65,000 kilograms, meat by 20,000 kilograms and annual per capita income by 165 yuan. The rice field development project in Zaya County with a total investment of 3.02 million yuan has led to an increase of grain output by 2.7 million kilograms and per capita income by 330 yuan annually. The green tea of Yi'ong is known outside the mountain area and enjoys a sterling reputation worldwide. The people of Nyingchi, in using animal husbandry to their advantage, have developed an integral system from feed production and processing to scale livestock feeding and specialized feeding. Pilot projects combining farming and animal husbandry have made gains. The establishment of the Comprehensive Feeding Farm in Zhaxi and the Manure Base in the region is the incipient transition from traditional animal husbandry relying on natural conditions. Although rich in resources, Nyingchi is restricted in economic development due to its remote location and underdeveloped transportation system, energy resources and communications. The people have realized that the most important factor of a market economy is to foster and develop the market in addition to transforming operations. And the construction of a market system has been quickly implemented by focusing on township construction. Commercial zones have been set up and developed on a township scale in Bayi, Zham Town, Mainling, Gongbo'gyamda and Nang, and multi-function markets have been established. The newly built Nyingchi-Lhasa Road, improved optical-cable communications, Ba River Hydraulic Power Station and the project connecting Bayi-Nyingchi Power Station to the grid have totally changed the backward situation at the time when the Regional Administration was re-established, greatly improved the investment environment, brought new vitality and vigor to the region.
